The ‘watch cap’ has a long military history dating back to medieval England in the 14th century, originating in a town called Monmouth. The hat in its early years would take the name of its hometown and commonly known as the ‘Monmouth Cap’. By World War II, knit cap became a standard cold weather headgear for the US Armed Forces. The term “watch cap” was coined because the item was commonly worn while wearing on duty on the boat or at the guard post.
